Dearu'a is a word that we the Uhuothoj'a sometimes use to call ourselves and to understand ourselves. This word means Being that lives in the forest. The one that we use mostly is the word Uhuothoj'a, which means 'pacific people'. We live near Port Ayacucho in the Federal Territory Amazonas. Our lands are in its greater part an immense mountain jungle. The rivers which cross it pour their water in the Orinoco. Almost all the rivers are wide and deep. According to the season of the year they have fish in abundance. |
We live in distinct parts. Our communities are found always near rivers. Among others, there are communities in the rivers Parguaza, Cataniapo, Cuao, Autana, Sipapo, Guayapo, Paria Large, Paria Tiny, Samariapo, Parhueña, Marieta, Mosquito, Piedra, Camani, Piojo. There are also Uhuothoj'a communities in the right margin of the rí or Ventauri, since the caserí or Morocoto up to the basin of the Manapiare river; in the right margin of the river Chivapure and in the river Orinoco from Piojo until San José Puruname. On the Colombian side there are Uhuothoj'a in the river Mataveni, river Vichada, river Guaviare and Zama. The Uhuothoj'a does not have frontiers, its law is to inhabit the jungle, and the jungle is its life.
